FAQs

What is Suna Traffic Channel?

Suna Traffic Channel connects navigation devices to real-time road traffic information.
With Suna Traffic Channel, you can give you more value every day, on every trip from your navigation system by helping answer questions like:

  • How long am I delayed?
  • Should I detour?
  • When will I arrive?
  • What is causing this jam?

By being better informed, motoring is less frustrating, and by avoiding severe and unexpected congestion you may even arrive sooner.

What information will I receive through Suna Traffic Channel?

Traffic information is comprised of three main components:

  • Where it is? – location
  • What the impact is - eg speed or delay
  • What the cause is – eg accidents, road works, lane closures

Messages that provide information about speed reductions or delays are most common. Where known, the cause of unusual delays is explained (NB: no cause is given for routine or ‘peak-hour’ congestion). This explanatory information is provided to help you judge the significance of a delay.

Coupled with your navigation device, only relevant information is drawn to your attention.

The international TMC standard enables us to broadcast messages with a certain ‘granularity’ or geographic resolution. Generally, the finest resolution that can be supported for messages on arterial roads is between intersections with other main roads where there are traffic lights. This works fine for navigation purposes, but explains why a traffic event may show across a length of road between intersections, even if it is really only at a point along the road.

Where can I buy Suna Traffic Channel?

Suna Traffic Channel can be purchased as part of a Personal Navigation Device (PND) or in-vehicle navigation system. Please contact your local distributor for more details.

After purchase, are there any extra costs involved?

No.  There are no extra costs.  Unlike systems that use the mobile phone network to send information, Suna Traffic Channel’s RDS-TMC broadcast service is free of carriage cost to activated devices. Use Suna Traffic Channel as much as you like – no bills will appear on your mobile phone account!

How long does the initial service period run?

Your device will entitle you to either ‘Lifetime Access’ or a ‘Fixed initial service period’. Check the documentation on your navigation device or traffic receiver for further information.

How do I know if I am receiving the SUNA Broadcast?

Because Suna Traffic Channel is broadcast using a normal FM radio signal, you can easily check for reception by tuning your car radio to the same frequency. If you have good audio quality, you should generally be capable of connecting to SUNA Traffic Channel.

Occasionally, as with all FM reception, brief drop-outs may occur – don’t worry however as your navigation system will store hundreds of messages. NB: If you have a portable navigation system correct use of the antenna is important – please refer to your navigation user manual.

Can I get Suna Traffic Channel for my current Personal Navigation Device?

Some devices are able to be adapted to receive Suna Traffic Message Channel. Please check with your individual user manual or with your PND supplier or manufacturer.
