What information will I receive from SUNA GPS Traffic Updates?

Currently available in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Adelaide and Perth. SUNA GPS Traffic Updates are provided continually as we monitor road conditions to bring you detailed warnings about both incidents, and traffic congestion across the metropolitan area that could affect your journey on the road.

We use a combination of sensors and cameras to continually monitor congestion levels across thousands of kilometres of arterial roads, freeways, and tollways. We broadcast warnings on these roads when we identify persistent and severe congestion. This information is quality controlled using GPS-equipped probe vehicles.

Additionally, we broadcast warnings about major incidents (such as accidents); road closures; major road works; severe road weather conditions, and special events expected to impact traffic.

This combination of congestion warnings and descriptive incident information enables you to make informed judgements about the severity of traffic problems affecting your route.

What is causing the jam, so that you know what lies ahead?

SUNA GPS Traffic Updates integrate seamlessly into the user interface of your GPS device. Once activated, you will experience a number of new features (depending on your GPS model):

  • Audible warnings of changed conditions ahead
  • Map display – showing location and nature of traffic problems
  • Strip map display – a pictogram view of traffic conditions affecting your route.
  • Estimated delay – an audible or visual prediction of delays ahead
  • Optional rerouting – allowing you to control whether you want to divert around or sit through the delays.
Understanding the severity of the reduced speed or delay, so you can make alternative plans.

Depending on your individual device, warnings may be presented as graphics, spoken word or you may simply be re-routed around the delay.

When you are using your navigation device with SUNA GPS Traffic Updates, you may receive delay messages. These give you the information about how the traffic on your route is flowing and tell you how long the anticipated delay is going to be to your journey.

Understanding what this means to your journey is simple:

On freeways we broadcast messages in steps of 10kph. We begin broadcasting if estimated speeds drop to around 50% or less of normal ‘free-flow’ speed. ‘Stationary Traffic’ suggests crawling below 5kph. Each speed message is an average measure between freeway junctions.

On other roads although the content of warnings is similar, most delay on arterial roads occurs at intersections. Average speed therefore takes into account the time stopped at traffic lights, as well as your actual speed while moving.
